Working with your Professors

Remember that professors are people. They have lives, they have feelings, and they have responsibilities of their own. No professor is perfect, and no professor will claim to be. Respect them, and remember these things.

  • Introduce yourself to professors and visit them during office hours.
  • It'll take time for professors to remember you; they teach many classes each semester, don't feel offended if you introduce yourself more than once.
  • Take time to get to know all your professors.
  • A professor's field/discipline is a huge part of their lives, and something they enjoy sharing. Talk to them about their personal research or opinions, career goals they had at your age, etc. They are an awesome, "real life"resource of information.
  • If you email, call, or visit your professor with questions, introduce yourself and give the class and section before asking the questions.
  • Some professors prefer to be called Dr. So-And-So, and some prefer being called Professor So-And-So. Find out what your professor prefers.
  • Never address your professor by their first name, or as Mr. or Mrs. So-And-So.
  • Attend class regularly and participate (i.e. ask questions, answer questions, and show up on time).
  • Sit near the front of the classroom. The professor will appreciate your interest and you'll get to know them better.
  • Understand that emails and phone calls to your professors may not be answered immediately. Professors have other responsibilities, too.
  • If emergencies or special circumstances come up, explain/talk to your professor-don't assume it will be okay.
