Dealing with Homesickness and Loneliness

Staying in contact with family members and friends during your college years keeps those ties strong and adds a feeling of belonging.

  • Understand that adjusting to college life can take a while.
  • Email and call family. Calling cards, and family phone plans are great for this.
  • Go meet new people
  • Stay in contact with friends back home. Call, IM, or invite them to visit.
  • Don't go home every weekend. You'll never get used to your new college surroundings.
  • Ask for mail or care packages. Family and friends can send your favorite foods, any items you left back home, or fun greeting cards.
  • Do all the free things on campus.
  • Bring things from home to decorate your room, or your desk area. If you're too far away for this, find small things at local stores that remind you of home.
  • Find things to do on campus [What to do on Campus].
