New Student Orientation Assistants (NSOA)

You can make a difference in the life of a first-year student...
be a volunteer of New Student Orientation Assistant (NSOA) and/or a First-Year Mentor.

Be a NSOA (New Student Orientation Assistant)

NSOA
  • • Serving as an NSOA is a great way to get involved, meet people and make a difference in the life of a new student.
  • • NSOA's are upperclass students who've been there and done that and are volunteering to spread their wealth of EMU knowledge. This energetic and spirited group of volunteers dedicates a week of their time to help new students navigate their way through life at EMU.
  • • NSOA's serve as group leaders to small groups of first-year students during the four-day New Student Orientation Program. They serve as mentors, role models, and sources of crucial information for the new students and their family members.
  • • Many of them are student leaders on campus in a wide array of academic and social organizations, and yet, many others utilize this opportunity as their first for a leadership experience on EMU's campus. NSOA's are typically among some of the most involved students on campus and display true passion for EMU.
  • • NSOA's complete an application and an extensive group and individual interview process. The commitment involves a three day training period prior to Orientation as well as four days of service during the New Student Orientation program.

Be a First Year Mentor

NSOA

The First-Year Mentor Program, a person-to-person support system between first-year students (mentees) and upperclass students (Mentors). Mentors are happy to drop the inside scoop on college survival skills like finding a great place to study, how to meet new people, and juggling the academic and social parts of college. Mentors have the opportunity to participate in service-learning, social, and academic events across campus and in the community. Mentors serve during the Fall semester. Mentors are recruited and selected from January through the start of Fall semester.

Mentors are asked:

  • • to attend (1) 2 hour training session during the Fall semester, usually held during the first week of classes.
  • • communicate with your mentee at least one hour per week, either through a one-on-one interaction or through First-Year Mentor Program sponsored activities.
