Spring Orientation

Eastern Michigan University wants to welcome you and make your transition as smooth as possible. Fusion New Student Winter Orientation takes place on Sunday, January 6, 2008. During Fusion, you’ll experience new people, places and programs that will become your life at EMU. You will learn about campus resources, academic support and student organizations. We have all the details covered for you– representatives from Financial Aid, Student Business Services, the EMU Bookstore, Parking, EagleOne Card (student ID) Office, and more will be available to answer your questions and take care of your last minute needs before classes start.

Orientation is a mandatory program for all new freshmen and is highly recommended for all transfer students. The Winter Orientation fee is $40 and includes the cost of lunch, session materials, the student packet, EMU student planner and one guest. EMU welcomes parents, families, and guests to attend Orientation with you. The cost of one guest is included with your registration; any additional guests will be billed to the student’s account for $15 per person.

Overview of the Schedule

Orientation is designed to give you a brief introduction to the EMU campus and your resources for success. At Winter Orientation you will learn about programs and services available at EMU. We will discuss academic resources, navigating campus, time management, technology, and using the myEmich web portal system. There will be time to ask questions. The program will close with enough time for you to take care of last minute University business and/or take part in a tour of campus.

Who attends All students new to EMU, including freshmen, transfer, commuter and residence hall students. Orientation is a mandatory program for all new freshmen students and is highly recommended for all transfer students.
Cost $40 and includes: lunch and snack, session materials, student packet, EMU student planner and one guest.For freshmen, the fee for this mandatory program will be automatically billed to your student account, regardless of attendance. For transfer students, the fee is billed to your account when you register for Orientation, it is nonrefundable after Jan. 2, 2008.
Families/Guests The Family Orientation program is designed specifically for families and guests who are supporting a student through the college journey. EMU welcomes families and guests; however, there are no special services available for children during this program. Please pre-register guests to help keep our meal count accurate. The student registration fee includes one guest. Additional guests will be billed to your student account at $15 per person.
Living on Campus? For students living on campus, residence hall move-in begins at 9 a.m; contact Housing for details or call 734.487.1300.

Special Needs? If you or your guests have any special needs including assistance with foreign language interpretation, physical disability, sight, hearing, etc, please let us know ahead of time by calling us.
  The University is closed from Friday, December 21, 2007 through Tuesday, January 1, 2008; only online registrations are accepted after December 21. Please register by January 2, 2008.

Noon-1 p.m. Welcome Luncheon, EMU Student Center, Ballroom Open the day with a nice sit-down lunch with your new classmates. Meal tickets are provided for registered students and guests.
9 a.m. to noon Residence Hall Move-in(Contact Housing 487.1300 for details)
10:45-11:45 a.m. Optional Campus Tour
Feel free to take part in an optional tour of the EMU campus, primarily highlighting classroom buildings. The tour departs from the EMU Student Center Information Center at 10:45 a.m. You can check-in for Orientation after the tour.
11:15-Noon Orientation Check-in, EMU Student Center, Information Desk (located on the 2nd floor)Here you and your family will check-in for orientation, receive your updated schedule for the day and lots of other freebies!

Student Program

2:10-2:45 p.m. Life at EMU small group time.Join small groups led by upperclass students for an opportunity to make some new friends and ask questions about to expect at EMU.
2:45-3 p.m. Break
3:05-4:20 p.m. Eastern Expectations & Life in the Classroom.Get a feel for the expectations EMU has of all new students; plus your chance to meet faculty before classes begin. We’ll discuss a wide range of topics from academic integrity to respecting differences to how to take responsibility for your learning.

Family/Guest Program

2:10-3:10 p.m. Supporting your Student(s) at EMU A focused discussion session with tips on how to actively participate and provide support during your student’s educational experience.
3:10-3:25 p.m. Break
3:30-4:20 p.m. Panel Discussion/Q & A .A panel of EMU faculty, staff and students available to answer your questions about life at EMU.
