Our Services

Individual Services

Daily life produces stress! Problems in relationships, confusion about one's goals or self, the demands of juggling school, work and family, or troublesome life events can produce upsetting emotions which interfere with academic and personal achievements. Speaking with an objective professional can provide relief, help you learn more about yourself, and develop new skills to deal more effectively with life's stresses.

EMU students seek counseling for many reasons. These include a desire to:

  • Increase self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Reduce feelings of depression, worry or anxiety
  • Change patterns leading to poor academic performance
  • Reduce loneliness
  • Become more assertive
  • Manage concerns relating to sexuality
  • Cope with the death of a friend or family member
  • Discuss eating or alcohol problems
  • Recover from past abusive experiences
  • Help adjusting to life in a new culture

Support Groups

Support and psychotherapy groups are often available during the Fall and Winter terms. Call 734.487.1118 for more information. For more information on available support groups, please click here.

Workshops

CAPS offers workshops on a variety of topics in classrooms and to student and staff groups at different campus sites.

Psychiatric Services

Available weekly during fall and winter semesters, and less frequently during the spring and summer months. You must be referred by a clinician in CAPS, Health Services, or another EMU clinic to meet with the psychiatrist. If you have questions, please contact us at 734.487.1118.

Light Therapy

CAPS offers light therapy services to combat Seasonal Affective Disorders (SAD), commonly known as the "Winter Blues." More information on SAD and light therapy is available here.

Referrals

Since our services may not be appropriate for all problems, your counselor could recommend career counseling, academic tutoring, medical evaluation, or another counseling agency or mental health professional.

Consultation

Faculty and staff may speak with a CAPS staff member about a student/classroom problem. Discussion may resolve the problem or help the student obtain the proper referral.

Special Events

CAPS offers several special events and programs throughout the year, such as National Depression Screening Day. Please call or stop by for the latest information.
