Getting Started

Making an Appointment

How do I get started?

If you have never been to CAPS, the way to begin is through an intake appointment.  You can schedule an intake by phone at (734) 487-1118, or in person at 313 Snow Health Center.

How soon will I be seen?

Clients requesting intake appointments are typically seen within a week.  However, the wait is sometimes longer depending on demand for services.  This is most likely to occur in September, October, March, and April.   If there is a wait for your first appointment, please go to this link for information about what to do while you wait.  It is important to keep your scheduled intake appointment because that time is reserved just for you.  If you are unable to make it, we request that you call reschedule or request a cancellation as soon as possible.

What if my problem is urgent?

Please call or come to CAPS and let the front desk staff know so we can assist you in the best possible way.  We offer same day emergency appointments for limited circumstances.

How long is each appointment?

Your first appointment will be 90 minutes long.  This includes 30 minutes for intake paperwork.  Subsequent visits are 45-50 minutes.

How much does counseling cost?

As a registered EMU student, there is no cost for treatment.  We are unable to see clients who are not registered EMU students.

Will I continue to see the person I first saw?

One visit is sometimes enough. If ongoing counseling is desired, you may see the therapist you first saw or may be referred to another therapist in the office, depending on your concerns and availability. The new therapist will be aware of your concerns before you are seen. You will remain with this person for ongoing treatment.

What if I’ve been to CAPS before?

Depending on the time of year, you may schedule directly with your former therapist or may be asked to schedule a meeting during his or her new client appointment time. The front desk staff will be happy to assist you.
