CAPS offers a variety of groups and workshops during the Fall and Winter Semesters.  In the Winter Semester of 2015 we will be offering the following groups.  Please contact the clinic for start dates and to see if you need to schedule an appointment for an intake before beginning group.


Coming Out/Being Out

Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30, Student Center Room 347.

Coming out is a lifelong, continuous process. This group welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning people to come together and discuss issues regarding coming out, being out, sexuality, identity and other topics. This group is facilitated by Sharon Carney, PhD & Paige Hover, PsyD.

Soul Speak: Women of Color Support Group

Thursdays from 2-3:30 PM, Kiva Room Student Center (Room 360, 3rd floor).

If you are a woman of color this group will help you connect with others who share unique struggles while at EMU. It offers a safe, supportive, and encouraging space to learn more about yourself and be empowered. This group is facilitated by Monica Thiagarajan, PhD & Joi Rencher, LMSW.

Mindful Being: Drop-In Meditation Group

Fridays  from 12:10-12:50, room 313 Snow Health Center.

This drop-in group is designed to help students learn the practice of mindfulness.  Mindfulness leads to decreases in stress and anxiety, improvements in concentration and attention, and increases in self-awareness and overall emotional well-being.  All levels of experience with meditation are welcome, even no experience at all!  This group is facilitated by Monica Thiagarajan, PhD, Melissa Plaufcan, PhD, and Aaron Ceresnie, PsyD.

Graduate Student Support Group

Fridays from 10:00-11:30, room 313 Snow Health Center.

This group will provide a space to share your problems and progress though graduate school.    Group will focus on issues like procrastination, balancing your personal and academic life, improving relationships with  professors and other students, and learning strategies to improve time management.  This group is facilitated by Aaron Ceresnie, PsyD.

Understanding Self and Others

Wednesdays from 2-3:30, Pre-screening is required for entry into this group.

Learn about yourself and your relationships with others in a safe environment. Practice new ways to express your thoughts, feelings and build self-confidence. To attend this group, you must first attend an intake appointment.  Please call 487-1118 to schedule, and let the front desk know you are interested in this group.  This group is facilitated by Melissa Plaufcan, PhD & Melissa Pulcini, MS.

We're the First!  First Generation Student Workshop

Dates and times to be announced.

This workshop is for students who identify as a first-generation college student, and/or for those whose parents did not complete a college education.  The goal of this workshop is to provide a confidential and supportive environment in which students will explore what it means to be an "f-gen," learn useful skills to navigate the college culture, and provide support to one another on this journey.

Feeling Better 101

Dates and times to be announced.

Feeling Better 101 is a three-part workshop for EMU students offered by EMU Counseling and Psychological Services. This workshop is designed to teach skills to help you cope with stress and improve your mood.  Please call CAPS for more information.
