College of Arts & Sciences
Fall 2007 Faculty Meeting

Remarks from Interim Dean Höft

campus

It is my pleasure and privilege to host the Arts and Sciences collegiate faculty gathering that marks the start of another academic year for us in the college and the beginning of our common dialog about the goals of the college and its central role in the academic life of EMU. We have worked together during the last two years to find ways to advance the stature of the college, its programs and its constituents: students, faculty, department heads, support staff, alumni and friends.

Today I will talk about the many individual achievements of the faculty this past year, successes of the college as a dynamic, academic entity and goals that I believe the college should pursue during this academic year. We have experienced adversity during the last year and that has become part of the fabric of our being EMU. However, that should not hinder us to craft a dialog for a future of our college that is at least as successful as its past.

My desire this morning is to guide our common dialog towards those matters that we determine during the course of this year to be central to the academic mission of our college. There are two thoughts, actually quotes, that I would like to share with you; they are 119 years apart and, as you might imagine, were made by mathematicians.
