Wikipedia Lecture Series

Thursday, February 7th
7:00 p.m.
Student Center Ballroom A

Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, will provide "An Introduction to Citizendium" on February 7 followed by a response from Marshall Poe, the 2007-2008 McAndless Scholar. This is the second lecture of our four-part Wikipedia series.

Sanger is the former editor-in-chief of Nupedia, co-founder and chief organizer (2001-2002) of its successor, Wikipedia and the founder of Citizendium. Citizendium is designed to address various perceived flaws in the Wikipedia system.

When majoring in philosophy in college, Sanger was asked: "What are you ever going to do with philosophy?" He said: "Well, change the way the world thinks, for one thing."

The lecture series is free and open to the public. Other lectures in this series are:

Thursday, March 6 - Andrew Kean - "The Dangers of Wikipedia"

The San Francisco Chronicle recently wrote that “every good movement needs a contrarian. Web 2.0 has Andrew Keen.” Keen, author of Cult of the Amateur: How the Democratization of the Digital World is Assaulting Our Economy, Our Culture, and Our Values, is indeed the leading contemporary critic of the Internet. He is the host of the popular Internet chat show afterTV.com and regularly appears on television and radio. His writing can be found on his CultoftheAmateur weblog, on ZDNet and CBS.com as well as in traditional publications like the Weekly Standard, Fast Company and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Thursday, April 10 - Katherine Walsh - Subject and location TBD
with a response by Marshall Poe
Kat Walsh is a member of the Wikimedia Board of Trustees, the ultimate corporate authority in the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. Walsh is also an administrator for Wikipedia; in this role, she has access to technical features that help with the maintenance of Wikipedia and can protect and delete pages, block other editors, and undo these actions as well.
