The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is proud to offer more than 100 scholarships to deserving students. The total value of scholarships in the College is more than $241,000.

Undergraduate students interested in applying for CAS scholarships will need to follow the directions given for EACH scholarship. Criteria for each scholarship are listed below and on the individual applications. Unless otherwise specified, typically one applicant is selected for each scholarship. The deadline for College-wide scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 academic year is Friday, February 13, 2009. Please contact the offices listed for deadline information regarding the Symposium and Department scholarships.

College-wide Scholarships

Adelson-NSDAR View and Print Application
The recipient of this scholarship must be a female Native-American student who will be full- or part-time, undergraduate or graduate with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Approximate value: $4,500.

Richard Albrecht Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient must have a declared major in the College of Arts & Sciences, demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular EMU or community activities, and preferably be a graduate of a Livingston County high school. Financial need is not a consideration. This scholarship may be split between the Fall and Winter semesters and may be renewed, however the recipient must reapply each subsequent year. Approximate value: $400.

Melvin and Hazel Cant Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient of the scholarship must be in the College of Arts & Sciences and demonstrate the interest and desire to work in the teaching profession. At the time of the award, the recipient must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and be enrolled for at least part-time (6 credit hours) during the terms the scholarship is awarded. The recipient must demonstrate financial need. Approximate value: $1,000 each.

College of Arts & Sciences Endowed Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient must have a declared major in the College of Arts & Sciences, at least 12 credit hours taken at EMU, a minimum GPA of 3.5 and provide an essay about why they chose their major. Approximate value: $400.

Developing Urban Teachers in STEM Subjects Scholarship (DUETSs)

Applicants must be admitted to the College of Education teacher preparation program and a secondary math or science teaching major. They must have one to two years of course work remaining (inclusive of student teaching). They must be willing to commit to teaching for two years in a high-need school for each year of scholarship support received. While administered by the Honors College, applicants do not need to be members of the Honors College.

Evans-Strand Scholarship View and Print Application
This award, modeled after the Nobel Peace Prize, annually recognizes an individual for significant contributions to advancing the understanding and furthering the acceptance of diversity at EMU. Award recipients receive a cash award and an award medallion. Each year’s award recipients will be listed on a plaque in a permanent campus location. Approximate Value: $1,000

FR. Bernard J. O'Connor Endowed Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient must be an undergraduate student status with a minimum GPA of 3.20. Must have successful completion of at least 18 credit hours at EMU at the time of the award. The award is open to students in all colleges and majors. Must have verifiable record of excellence in civic engagement within the student's program of study, as well as in co-curricular and/or extra-curricular activities. Carl D. & Peggy G. Pursell Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient must have a major in a field of study within the College of Arts & Sciences with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.4 within his/her major. Eligibility requires that the student must be carrying at least 12 credit hours and must have completed at least 30 credit hours. Only undergraduate students are eligible. Students should have demonstrated leadership skills through community service or involvement in extra curricular activities at EMU and show academic excellence or scholarly/creative expression within their field of study (e.g. Symposium). Approximate value: $300.


Gregory W. Stevens Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipient must be a student majoring in Communication & Theatre, History, Philosophy, or Political Science. The award is open to all class levels (with the exception of ROTC students) and is renewable annually or by semester. Minimum 3.0 GPA and involvement in community or school based extra-curricular activities are required. Approximate value: $2,000.

Stonewall Scholarship

Applications are due in April for the following Fall term. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. This award is available to undergraduate students (or Second Bachelors students) with a minimum EMU cumulative GPA of 2.75, and who have completed 60 credit hours (EMU earned or accepted transfer credits) and who will be enrolled full-time (at least 12 credit hours per semester). Graduate students are eligible if they have completed 12 credit hours of graduate courses, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and will be enrolled full time (6 hours for graduate assistants, 8 hours for other graduate students).

Warren Scholarship View and Print Application
The recipients must be undergraduate, with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.4 within their major, and with financial need. Applicants must have completed 60 hours at the time of application and must be carrying at least 12 credit hours at EMU. The total Warren Scholarship is distributed to five or more applicants annually. Approximate value: $2,000 each.

Ronald W. Collins Scholarship
The recipient must be a full-time (12 credit hours per semester) EMU undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA majoring in any academic department. To be eligible students must have participated in the CAS Undergraduate Symposium in a previous year and are participating in the current year.

Undergraduate Symposium Silver Anniversary Scholarship Series
The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year Undergraduate Symposium, have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the Fall and/or Winter terms of the following academic year.

Barry A. Fish Scholarship
The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year Undergraduate Symposium. In addition, eligibility requires at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU GPA, a declared major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences, and EMU attendance as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year.

Elwood John C. Kureth Scholarship
The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate (12 credit hours per semester) student for the Fall and/or Winter terms of the following academic year with a declared major or minor in the College of Arts & Sciences, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and be a presenter at the current year Undergraduate Symposium. This scholarship is open to all class levels.

University Fellowship Award for Symposium Participants
The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year Undergraduate Symposium. In addition, eligibility requires completion of an undergraduate degree by August of that year, minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (if more than 20 students apply and meet the minimum eligibility requirements, all applicants will be ranked by GPA and award offers made as funding allows), application and admission to a graduate degree program at Eastern Michigan University, and enrollment as an EMU graduate student for the following fall.
