Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Office of the Dean awards more than $75,000 in scholarships annually, and CAS departments and schools award more than $625,000 in scholarships.

  • Advice for Applicants

    Your essay is a very important part of your application. Your essay should be thoughtful and original, it should express your views in your own voice, and it should fully answer the question asked. To develop your ideas for your essay, discuss the question with a professor, faculty advisor, or University Writing Center tutor. Take time to plan, draft, revise, and proofread your essay. The University Writing Center can help you with the writing process.


    The letter of recommendation also carries a lot of weight in the selection process. The better your recommender knows you, the stronger a recommendation they will be able to write. Meet with your recommendation writer and tell them (or remind them) about your accomplishments and goals. Give your recommender ample time to write their recommendation, at least three weeks if possible. 


    The Holman Success Center offers this additional advice:

    • Meet with a Success Coach. We help students with each stage of the searching and applying for scholarships process. We introduce the idea of using a scholarships tracker, breaking up the process into do-able chunks, staying proactive with the application process, etc.
    • Utilize the University Writing Center for writing support where appropriate. They can help with application essay structure, overall organization, and general proofreading, for example.
    • Connect with your faculty advisor to discuss the scholarships in more detail and how you are eligible / could become more eligible for future scholarships.
    • Attend scholarship planning workshops offered through the Holman Success Center.
  • CAS Undergraduate Scholarships

    Adelson-NSDAR Scholarship (Undergraduate or Graduate)

    Awarded to a female Native American student with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

    Richard Albrecht Memorial Scholarship

    The recipient must have a declared major in the College of Arts and Sciences and demonstrate involvement in extracurricular EMU or community activities, and preferably be a graduate of a Livingston County high school.

    Melvin and Hazel Cant Scholarship

    The recipient must have a declared major in the College of Arts and Sciences and demonstrate an interest and desire to work in the teaching profession. At the time of the award, the recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be enrolled for at least part-time and demonstrate financial need.

    College of Arts and Sciences Endowed Scholarship

    The recipient must have a declared major in the College of Arts and Sciences, at least 12 credit hours taken at EMU and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. 

    Father Bernard J. O'Connor Endowed Scholarship in Civic Engagement

    The recipient must have earned a minimum GPA of 3.2 and have successfully completed at least 18 credit hours at EMU. Students may be from any area of study as long as the chosen program of coursework highlights citizenship issues. Students must also possess a verifiable record of excellence in their contribution to this theme within their program of study as well as in co-curricular and/or extra-curricular activities. 

    Carl D. and Peggy G. Pursell Scholarship

    The recipient must have an undergraduate major within the College of Arts and Sciences and an overall GPA of 3.0 with 3.4 in their major. Eligibility requires that the student must be carrying at least 12 credit hours, have completed at least 30 credit hours and demonstrate leadership skills through community service or involvement in extracurricular activities at EMU.

    Reed Family Endowed Scholarship for STEM

    The recipients must have financial need and be pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or math.

    Gregory W. Stevens Scholarship

    The recipient must have a declared major in one of the following departments: Communication, Media and Theatre Arts; History and Philosophy; or Political Science. Minimum 3.0 GPA and involvement in community- or school-based extracurricular activities are required.

    Stonewall Scholarship (Undergraduate or Graduate)

    The recipients are undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrate leadership and/or involvement in organizations, activities or issues that promote a positive gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender environment. Neither application for nor acceptance of this scholarship indicates the sexual or gender orientation of the applicant.

    Dr. James C. Waltz Endowed Scholarship in the Arts and Sciences

    The recipient is an undergraduate student majoring in any academic department or school in the College of Arts & Sciences, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated financial need.

    Frances R. Warren Scholarship

    The recipients must be undergraduate, have an overall GPA of 3.0 with 3.4 in their major, and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have completed 60 hours at the time of application and must be carrying at least 12 credit hours at EMU.

  • CAS Graduate Scholarships

    Adelson-NSDAR Scholarship (Undergraduate or Graduate)

    The recipient must be a female Native American student with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

    Bob Holkeboer Symposium/Graduate Research Conference Scholarship

    The graduate student recipient is a past presenter at the Undergraduate Symposium and a past undergraduate member of the Honors College. Minimum 3.5 GPA required.

    Bruce K. Nelson Scholarship

    Awarded to Undergraduate Symposium presenters in even-numbered years, and to Graduate Research Conference presenters in odd-numbered years. The recipient  must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU full-time.

    Robert Neely Endowed Scholarship

    Awarded to Undergraduate Symposium presenters in odd-numbered years, and to Graduate Research Conference presenters in even-numbered years. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

    Stonewall Scholarship (Graduate or Undergraduate)

    The recipients are graduate or undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership and or involvement in organizations, activities or issues at EMU or the surrounding community that promote a positive environment for LGBTQ+ students and community members. Neither application nor acceptance of this scholarship indicates the sexual or gender orientation of the applicant.

  • Undergraduate Symposium Scholarships

    All symposium-related scholarships require students to present at the current year Undergraduate Symposium prior to application.     Bruce K. Nelson Scholarship

    Awarded to Undergraduate Symposium presenters in even-numbered years, and to Graduate Research Conference presenters in odd-numbered years. The recipient  must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU full-time.

    John W. Porter Student Research Excellence Scholarship

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium in an art-related discipline within CAS, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student.

    Donald M. Loppnow Undergraduate Symposium Endowed Scholarship

    The recipient must be a returning student who has presented at the Undergraduate Symposium with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

    Robert Neely Endowed Scholarship

    Awarded to Undergraduate Symposium presenters in odd-numbered years, and to Graduate Research Conference presenters in even-numbered years. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

    Dale and Gloria Heydlauff Undergraduate Symposium Student Excellence Scholarship

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student. Also requires a demonstrated commitment to community service with priority to Symposium participant with travel abroad experience or global studies focus.

    Bette Warren and Sally McCracken Endowed Scholarship for the Symposium

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's undergraduate Symposium representing either mathematics, or communication, media & theater arts, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student.

    Ronald W. Collins Scholarship

    The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA and have participated in the Undergraduate Symposium in a previous year as well as the current year.

    Undergraduate Symposium Silver Anniversary Scholarship Series

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student.

    Barry A. Fish Scholarship

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium. In addition, eligibility requires at least a 3.0 GPA, a declared major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences, and attendance as a full-time undergraduate student.

    Elwood John C. Kureth Scholarship

    The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student with a declared major or minor in the College of Arts and Sciences, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be a presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium.

    University Fellowship Award for Symposium Participants

    The recipient must be a student presenter at the current year's Undergraduate Symposium. In addition, eligibility requires completion of an undergraduate degree by August of that year, minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, application and admission to a graduate degree program at Eastern Michigan University and enrollment as an EMU graduate student for the following fall.

    Lerner Family Scholarship in Jewish Studies

    The recipient is an outstanding undergraduate student who presented on a topic connected with Jewish Studies at the Undergraduate Symposium during the current academic year. Applications should include (1) a description of the Symposium project; (2) a statement about how the Symposium project contributes to our knowledge of Jewish peoplehood; (3) a resume/vita; and (4) a letter of support from the faculty sponsor.
