About the Charles McKenny Award in Literary and Visual Art

Originally founded in 2004 as the Wrightgood Scoot Award, the Charles McKenny Award is an annual competition established in 2006 to give artists outside of the EMU community an opportunity to be published in Cellar Roots. Past winners can be found on the Archive page. (EMU students should use the Submit link to the right and the guidelines found there to submit their work.)

The award was created to honor the memory of EMU's 13th president and published poet, Charles McKenny, who was influential in the creation of EMU's first student center.

McKenny Union was erected in 1931; its architecture utilizes both art deco and collegiate gothic styles, resulting in the successful marriage of the traditional to the modern. This union reflects Cellar Roots as we strive to preserve our legacy while also setting new standards in innovation.
