Eastern Michigan University ’s Center for Regional and National Security (CeRNS) is pleased to announce that we are preparing to offer the 23 rd Police Staff and Command and 10 th Fire Staff and Command programs for 2008.
Over the past few months CeRNS and the School of Police and Fire Staff Command programs have seen major changes. Dr. Paul Kuwik has been named Interim Director of CeRNS. Brenda MacDonald, SPSC Class of 98, is the main contact for Police Staff and Command. Gary Zulinski, SPSC Class of 98, is the main contact for Fire Staff and Command. Brenda and Gary come to both programs with a commitment to maintain the reputation and high standards in keeping with Eastern Michigan University’s commitment of Education First!
The School of Police/Fire Staff and Command for 2008 has been completely revised. The curriculum consists of five major topic areas intended to address the changing needs of the law enforcement/fire community. These topic areas are:
Leadership
Planning and Decision Making
Human Resource Management
Administering the Police/Fire Agency
Critical Situations and Homeland Security
Highlights of the renovated program include:
Greater emphasis on leadership development.
Addition of a 20 hour block of instruction on quality improvement, systematic problem solving, planning and decision making.
Inclusion of a 49 hour block of instruction on critical incidents and homeland security.
Several new topic areas (e.g., consolidations, media relations).
Greater emphasis on practical application (e.g. realistic exercises, projects)
Increased rigor (e.g., accountability for reading assignments, attendance).
Complete revision of training materials to ensure classes follow a “tell- show- practice- feedback” model, that lectures are laid out in a logical manner, and that supplemental materials (e.g., journal articles) are truly relevant and needed.
We have applied to MCOLES for a grant to support the Police Staff and Command program. We will not know the status of the grant until mid December.
We will “kick-off” each program with a weekend session that will cover orientation and will include a very special leadership development workshop. This weekend session also allows the full program to be covered in 9 weeks versus the former 10 week format. The course still fulfills the required MCOLES 350 hours.
