Social Work

The fully accredited baccalaureate social work program at Eastern Michigan University focuses on the person-in-environment and prepares graduates to work with individuals, families, small groups, communities and organizations. Employment opportunities include hospitals, nursing homes, community health services, substance abuse agencies, rehabilitation services, public health agencies, residential treatment programs and many others.

The Social Work Department has been involved in international exchange programs including England and Mexico. There are several active student orgranziations including the Association of Black Social Workers, the Student Social Work Organization, and Tri-Pride. The honors program allows students to work with faculty in pursuing special interests, culminating in their senior thesis. Social work programs can fit your schedule, as most classes are offered both during the day time and evenings. The Social Work program includes two semesters of field placement work experience in area social agencies.

Where do I start? Take SWRK 120 Introduction to Social Work Services & Professional Roles ( 3cr ) An overview of the social work profession including its philosophy, values, professional roles and current trends. Includes a discussion of practice areas such as child and family services, public welfare services, criminal justice, mental health, medical and industrial settings.
