The Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Humanitarian Scholarship Program is made possible through an endowment. The awards are for $1,000 and $750 and will be presented at the President’s Luncheon on Martin Luther King. Jr. Day. The scholarship will be credited to the recipient’s student account for the winter semester.
The criteria for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Humanitarian Award include:
1) a commitment to promoting respect and improving the quality of life for all people consistent with the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
2) service to Eastern Michigan University and/or the southeastern Michigan community
3) a completed Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award application, copies of which are located at either the Office of Financial Aid (403 Pierce Hall) or the Center for Multicultural Affairs (358 Student Center)
4) a completed essay of no more than two typed pages discussing the nominee’s achievements and qualifications with regard to the Award purpose as stated above
5) two letters of support, one of which must be from an Eastern Michigan University staff or faculty member
6) having been enrolled at Eastern Michigan for this academic year’s fall and winter semesters
a. 12 credit hours for undergraduate students
b. 8 credit hours for graduate students
7) being in good standing with the University
Completed application materials must be received by the Office of Government Relations and Special Projects, 202 Welch Hall, by Friday, January 9, 2009. Only completed applications will be considered. Late applications will not be accepted.

The Book Scholarship Program provides a $500 book scholarship exclusively to students who are attending Eastern Michigan University. Scholarship awards will be awarded annually. The Eastern Michigan University Black Alumni association would like all recipients to use this scholarship funding towards books for the Fall or Winter term.
It should be understood that solely the Eastern Michigan Black Alumni scholarship committee will conduct the selection and award of scholarship recipients. The university will not take part in the selection process nor recommend any applicant as a candidate for this scholarship.
