Latino Heritage Month
The Center for Multicultural Affairs recognizes and commemorates the Latino/Hispanic experience during Latino Heritage Month. Our office develops events that explore the diversity and complexity of the Latino experience with programs akin to “Black v. Brown: What’s the Beef?” and the showing of “Motorcycle Diaries.” CMA also provides opportunities for students to celebrate Latino cultural with programs such as “Flavors of Latin America” and “Platanos & Collard Greens.” Latino History Month programs promote the CMA’s goals for cultural exploration, dialogue, and personal reflection.
Native American Heritage Month
Our office explores the various Native/American Indian experiences through academic lectures and discussions during Native American Heritage Month. CMA events such as “Health and Wellness in the Native American Community” and “Sharing our Lifeway” allow students to think critically and creatively about these experiences. During this month, CMA seeks to provide diverse programming that looks at the cultural and political perspectives expressed throughout the Native/American Indian experience.
Black History Month
During Black History Month, CMA sponsors events that celebrate the history and achievements of African Americans through socially conscious programs such as “Am I My Brothers or Sisters Keeper Town Hall Meeting?” and the “Bridging the Gap Series” Summit.” During this month, students are encouraged to assist their communities through community service events during opportunities similar to Blackout. CMA also seeks to create an environment that encourages creative learning through events such as the Annual Jazz night. Our office encourages all students to join these essential discussions and to participate in these events so as to help raise cultural awareness.
Islam Awareness Month
In March, the Center for Multicultural Affairs sponsors collaborative events with the Muslim Student Association that honored the experiences of Islam. Our office develops socially conscious programs that seek to help EMU students become more aware of the culture and its history. Through collaborative programs include the showing of the “Thirty Day Challenge,” EMU’s Got Talent,” and “Faces of Islam.” These discussion and lecture events help students learn in a secure and supportive event.
Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Throughout the last month of the winter semester, CMA celebrates Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage. Asian/Pacific Islander Month events reflect the diverse experiences of these cultures. Each event either explores their political issues or their cultural richness. Discussions such as “Asian Cultural Norms and Transition” and cultural awareness programs provide our students with the opportunity to explore diversity in a meaningful way.
