Mackowiak has taught various journalism courses at EMU since 1990. During his teaching tenure he was also a copy editor on the news desk with the Ann Arbor News from 1990 until the paper's close in July of 2009. With the News he edited news copy, wrote headlines, designed and proofread pages to meet daily deadlines, and worked with staff reporters and free-lance writers to assign and edit stories for various newspaper sections. His experience includes service as the weekend wire editor to help produce news pages on deadline for the Saturday and Sunday issues, writing of numerous editorials, and occasionally work with other opinion page editing duties for the newspaper.

From 1972 to 1990 Mackowiak wrote, reported and edited for Michigan community weekly newspapers in the Newaygo County, Manistique and Gaylord areas. Edited two local history books in Newaygo and Manistique.
