The Threepenny Opera

The Threepenny Opera

by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill
English translation of the dialogue by Robert MacDonald
and of the lyrics by Jeremy Sams.

Directed by Lee Stille, Music Direction by Howard Cass

Sinister, musical comedy

Cut-throat gangster Macheath marries Polly Peachum, daughter of "The Beggar King" who has grown rich by syndicating London's poor. Angry upon learning Macheath's true identity, Polly's parents scheme to sabotage the marriage and destroy Macheath. They threaten to ruin the royal coronation parade, forcing police chief "Tiger" Brown to lead his friend Macheath, a.k.a. "Mack the Knife", to the gallows. Brecht and Weill, with translation by Robert MacDonald and lyrics by Jeremy Sams, twist together a darkly humorous tale that is part love story, part crime drama, part social satire and wholly entertaining.

Used by arrangement with European American Music Corporation, agent for The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., and agent for the Brecht Heirs.
