Like most finance graduates this spring, Adam Kauer will be hitting the pavement looking for a job. But the senior from Goodrich, Michigan also plans to invest his time (and money) into his business, StorageBid.com, and the money he won for placing first in the Skandalaris Business Plan Competition will help him reach that goal. There is plenty of room for success as the storage garage industry generates more than $154 billion annually. Conceived out of a perceived necessity, Kauer created StorageBid.com to bridge the gap between consumers looking to store their personal belongings and storage garage owners looking to fill empty units. The web-based company will be auction-based where storage garage owners bid for consumer's business and give them the most affordable price possible – think Kayak for storage units. Auction-based sites are hot right now and Kauer wants to cash in.

He learned a great deal participating in the business plan competition. "It was an amazing experience," said Kauer. "It was an incredible day for EMU and how it is spreading entrepreneurship." Outsourcing the development of the website will allow Adam to begin business development this summer and knocking on doors and getting meetings with the largest storage companies will take time.

He is also entered in the Great Lakes Entrepreneurship Quest (GLEQ) Business Plan Competition and realizes that getting his idea in front of investors as much as possible is key to receiving funding. And if all of those tasks are not enough to keep him occupied, he also has plans to develop a new mobile app and continue his job search. "Keeping busy is the name of the game at this point."
