Two Eastern Michigan University alumni, Board of Regents member Jim Webb and his wife, Cathy Webb, were recognized for their extensive service to the University on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 as the College of Business named one of its classrooms after the Webbs.

Administrators, faculty members and several students gathered to congratulate the Webbs and see the plaque beside Room 219 on the ground floor of the College of Business (COB).

Michael Tidwell, dean of the COB, said the naming recognizes the Webbs’ many contributions and loyalty to the college, including last year, when they postponed a vacation so that Jim could speak to students at the college’s first annual Professional Development Business Conference.

“You honor your commitments,” Jim Webb said, noting he told that to the students last fall. “Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t easy.”

EMU President Susan Martin said she can always count on the Webbs for support, noting the many miles they’ve traveled on behalf of Eastern and what gracious hosts they have been. “I can’t thank (them) enough,” she said.

Regent Webb, graduated with a B.B.A. in management from EMU in 1971, and earned an M.B.A. in finance from EMU in 1976. He is currently the Chairman of Aon Risk Services, Inc. of Michigan.

Cathy Webb received a degree in political science from EMU in Dec. 1997. She served fourteen years on the Farmington Public Schools Board of Education, and was named Farmington Hills Citizen of the Year.

She has maintained an active interest in technology and politics. As to what motivates her to devote such service to EMU, Cathy Webb cites, “my experiences, and my husband’s respect and love for EMU, and his passion to serve.”

Regent Webb credited his professional success in part to the base he got in his education at Eastern. He noted the professors’ patience with him, along with the rigor of his studies.
“They taught me, and taught me well,” he said of his classes. “I am a proud Eagle.”

Cathy Webb said, “We’re proud to officially be part of this building.”

She noted that after earning a two-year degree and then being away from college for a time, she came back to school to earn her bachelor’s degree at Eastern, calling her two years there “a fabulous experience.”

Regent Webb has been very active in the EMU community. In 1988 he received the Alumnus Achievement Award, and in 1989 he was Chair of the Campaign for Champions fundraising effort. He received the Dr. John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award in 1992, and now serves on the EMU Foundation Board.

Regent Webb was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in December 2012. He is appointed for a term expiring December 2020.
