Steve Futrell (BA89) combined his natural drive and focus with his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University to build an award-winning company that has become a leading provider of voice and data networking equipment and services.

The EMU alumni is the founder, CEO and President of Technology Solutions, a Livonia-based company that offers state-of-the-art technology to help customers maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. Under his leadership, the company has experienced increased revenue growth, nearly doubling its size in recent years.

Not only has the company received multiple awards for being a top economic performer, this May Technology Assurance Group (TAG) honored Technology Solutions with the Triple Crown Award for Superior Overall Performance and the Recognition of Outstanding Commitment to Corporate Training Award.  TAG, an international association of independent unified communication providers, presented the awards to Futrell at its annual convention in Savanah, GA.

“Most businesses see the Triple Crown as the big prize because it signifies a very healthy organization, strong financial performance and leadership in our marketplace,” says Futrell.

“However, we’re most proud of the Outstanding Commitment to Corporate Training Award. We’ve spent years fostering a company culture that’s focused on personal and professional development. Our unrelenting commitment to employee growth is what contributes to all other awards,” adds Futrell, whom the City of Livonia named as one of the 10 people most likely to give “Definition to the Decade of 2011-2020” in Livonia.

Technology Solutions provides complete converged solutions that incorporate voice systems, data systems and structured cabling needs to customers throughout the nation, saving them time and cost and enabling them to leverage their IT investment for future growth.

Futrell’s appreciation for the importance of professional development stems, in part, from his education at EMU, he says. “Eastern’s faculty and staff ingrained in me the attitude to never stop learning. It’s the key to continued success.”

The 49-year-old credits EMU’s College of Business with successfully preparing him for his career. “I’ll never forget the realistic job preview that one of my business classes offered. Not only did it prepare me personally; the lessons it offered continue to play an important role in how we hire today,” adds Futrell, who serves on EMU’s Technology Advisory Board and  Business Advisory Board.

Eastern’s COB also provided another invaluable benefit—it’s where he met his wife, Paige Futrell, who received her bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1987. The couple, of Livonia, have four children.
