More than 100 Eastern Michigan University students, alumni, faculty and employer representatives hit the links at Eagle Crest Resort this summer for the 19th Annual Accounting & Finance Department Alumni and Student Golf Scramble.

“The event provides an opportunity for alumni and employer representatives to get to know and network with students and faculty,” said Zafar Khan, head of the Department of Accounting & Finance at EMU. “The focus is on relationship building and networking, but the funds generated, after expenses, go towards professional development of our faculty and students."

Khan said that EMU alumni Mark Kruzcek (and his firm Doeren Mayhew) and Angela Schopa helped organize this year’s event, which drew a large turnout.

The golf outing is one of many events that bring together alumni, employers, students and faculty to talk with each other in an informal sports setting. It allows alumni and their employers the opportunity to see their interaction and financial support to the department at work.

“The greatest beneficiaries are the currents students and companies that participate,” said Khan. “The key is engagement and involvement to build lifelong, mutually beneficial relationships.”

He hopes that future outings will be even more successful. The event’s 20th annual outing is scheduled to take place on June 12, 2015.

“The golf outing has historically not been a major fundraising event, but it would be great if the event also helped raise money for student scholarships,” said Khan. “Of course, having a good time and building lifelong relationships has and will continue to be our main goal.”
