V. Experimental Program Description (Rule 53)
Program Purpose:
Attach a statement describing the purpose and objectives(s) of this preparation program. Please include the following:
The advisory committee of this program in conjunction with the tenure-track faculty have discussed in detail and approved the proposed program to be approved by the state. Candidates aspiring to become Business Education Teachers must have a breadth of knowledge and work experience to transfer their areas of expertise to students. In past practices, Eastern Michigan University and the College of Technology have supported the concept of teacher certification programs having a broad breadth of content (credit hour requirements) there was not sufficient hours left for these candidates to pursue a minor. Therefore, Eastern Michigan would like to continue to awarding teaching certificates to students that have: (a) completed the program of study, (2) passed the appropriate area of content test, and (3) had appropriate and recent work experience.
Business Education students that have received certification with an endorsement in Vocational Business (VB) or Marketing Education (VM) have not had difficulty securing jobs in the content area. Many of the business education teachers in the State of Michigan are fast approaching retirement age. With the number of teachers either retiring or having their contracts “bought out” the demand for Business Education Teachers should still slightly be under the supply of candidates. For the past three years there have been approximately eight to nine student teachers per semester in business and marketing education which is a good indicator of what the numbers should be for the next three years. Eastern should graduate and/or certify approximately 120 students in the next three years. Therefore, those students certified by Eastern should be able to secure teaching positions in their major content area.
