Section 8: Special Recognition of Programs for Chemistry
The Chemistry Department at EMU has received special recognition for its overall Professional Program in Chemistry. This special recognition is in the form of approval by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This approval (the ACS is not an accrediting body, but rather the professional society to which most chemists belong) indicates that EMU has a high quality Chemistry Program, and it meets the demanding standards (courses offered, degree requirements, facilities, library holdings, faculty, instructors, professional development, etc.) set by the ACS. While the ACS does not give approval for Chemistry teaching programs, its approval of the EMU’s Professional Program in Chemistry does command respect for the quality of EMU’s overall instruction in Chemistry.
The documentation for this approval by the ACS is provided.
In addition to the ACS approval for the Professional Program in Chemistry, the EMU Chemistry Department has also received special recognition from the ACS for the EMU Student Affiliates (Chemistry Club) of the ACS. This extracurricular organization allows students, including secondary teaching students, to become involved in outreach to the community. Often this outreach is designed to take chemistry into the secondary schools or to attract secondary students to programs offered at EMU. One event in particular attracts hundreds of elementary and secondary students each year to EMU. This is the yearly “Saturday Morning at the Lab,” which is a series of chemical educational demonstrations that is presented buy EMU students and faculty. In recent years, this program has also attracted the participation of Michigan Home School students as participants (and these participants are taught the demonstrations by EMU students and faculty).
For the past several years this organization has received special awards from the ACS for its activities, and documentation for the most recent year is provided .
