Previous Program Approval/Recognition

            EMU's program has been accredited by NCSS and the state of Michigan in the past six years. Our social studies program was invited to contribute to a conference on preparing future history teachers, sponsored by the AHA, OAH and NCSS this June, to talk about our preparation and outreach efforts. Our program has also been featured in the OAH newsletter and AHA perspectives.

            EMU’s Department of History and Philosophy has also been recognized by external funding agencies as a leading provider of pre-service and in-service teacher training. Michigan Campus Compact has awarded the department a grant to introduce service-learning into history teaching methods classes, and the Michigan Department of Education has recently awarded the department funds to improve social studies instructions in Ypsilanti Public Schools.
