Professional Development and Support
EMU has worked to create professional development opportunities for our recent graduates. These offerings include the summer institute on improving social studies teaching, a collaboration with Ann Arbor Public Schools and Washtenaw Intermediate School District. Each summer, over 50 K-12 teachers have participated in the workshop, which has been the recipient of Eisenhower professional development grant funding. The workshop features a K-5 and 6-12 section, and CEUs and EMU graduate credit have been made available as an incentive for teacher participation. Many EMU alumni have been made aware of this opportunity and taken this workshop.
EMU is also the institutional sponsor of the Michigan Council for History Education, a statewide organization of K-16 history teachers. We have co-sponsored the annual conference of MCHE and have developed a state-wide workshop of history teaching (K-12) for Summer 2003, with a faculty drawn from history departments across the state. We have paid the registration for current EMU students to attend this conference, and many alumni attend this event.
EMU is co-sponsoring, with MCHE, the first annual state-wide workshop on improving history instruction, held at the Michigan Historical Center this July. EMU faculty will serve as coordinators of this three-day event.
EMU’s Department of Teacher Education is host to a number of professional development opportunities, including the Biannual Best Practices Conference.
