Math VI.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT (POST GRADUATION)

The faculty of the Mathematics Department is committed to fostering the continued development of graduates in mathematics teaching.  Because most graduates remain in the metropolitan Detroit area, connections between faculty and students that were initiated during coursework leading to certification are maintained after students graduate and/or receive certification.

As a result of the continued communication between graduates and faculty members, opportunities are created for reciprocal involvement for both parties in the University and in P-12 schools.  For example, students continue to consult with Mathematics faculty members.  It is common for former students to bring issues they have confronted in teaching mathematics to the attention of their former instructors for discussion.  Students often bring the issues to the instructor’s current classes for discussion.  These students often serve as guest speakers and on panels in Mathematics Classes.  In this way, the many complexities of contemporary elementary and secondary mathematics instruction are continuously linked to the preparation of new mathematics teachers so that they can address these issues.
