Re:        Political Science Education Rejoinder

Standards/Requirements Not Met on May 12, 2003 for Major.

Standard 1.1 describe the purpose of state and local government in the United States.

An introduction to this topic is begun in the PLSC 112/113 courses required in the general education sequence.  The topic is discussed in detail in the PLCS 202 State and Local Government course now required.

Standard 1.9 and 1.10 explain how the world is organized politically including governmental systems and power relationships beyond government; and  explain how American foreign policy is formed and describe the roles the United States plays in the international arena.

Both PLSC 211, Introduction to Comparative Government, and 212, Introduction to International Relations, answer these standards.  Students are required to take two courses out of a selection of three courses, two of which are PLSC 211 and 212.  Students will have to take at least one of these courses to meet the program requirements.

Standard 2.1 sequence chronologically major eras within United States history and key events within those eras in order to examine relationships and explain cause and effect.

The program has changed the general education requirement from the Western Civilization sequence to the United States history sequence, HIST 123 and 124.  This standard is also addressed in ECON 375, Economic History of the United States.

Standard 2.3 describe the market system and apply basic economic concepts as identified in the Michigan Curriculum Framework.

ECON 375, Economic History of the United States, is now required in this major to address this standard.

The Political Science minor will now be only available for candidates majoring in either Social Studies or History.  Therefore, all the weaknesses are met since the Social Studies and History majors have required course work addressing these standards.
