What are the qualifications for entry to the EMU teacher preparation program?
At EMU,
students are not admitted to the Initial Teacher Preparation
Program as freshmen. To be admitted, students must have:
- Completed
at least 56 credits, including at least 12 at EMU.
- An
EMU GPA 2.50 overall.
- An
EMU GPA of 2.50 in major. If 3 minors—Average must be 2.5.
- If
the following courses have been completed before admission
to the Initial Teacher Preparation Program, students must have earned
a C or higher in order to be admitted. If completed after
admission, students must still earn a C or higher. Elementary: ENGL
121, CTAS 121/124, MATH 108, MATH 110E, All Science Requirements, EDPS
322, and SPGN 251. Secondary: ENGL 121, CTAS 121/124, MATH requirement,
Science requirements, EDPS 322, and SPGN 251.
- Students
must have passed all 3 parts of Michigan Basic Skills test with a
score of 220 or higher. Submit copy of test scores with application.

What GPA do I need to have to get into the EMU teacher preparation program?
Will that change?
You need
a 2.50 overall EMU GPA and a 2.50 GPA in major, or the average of 3
minors.

3.
Once I’ve submitted my application and other required materials,
how long will it take to get into the teacher preparation program?
Usually
it takes two weeks. It is best to avoid the rush at the beginning
and end of each semester.
4.
What is Group Advising? Which session should I attend?
Group advising
is an information session that provides program requirements for the
following: General Studies,teacher preparation program admission, Pre-Student
Teaching, Michigan State Testing, Professional Core Classes, Majors
& Minors, Student Teaching, and Certification & Graduation.
You do not have to sign up in advance to attend a session.
All students with the exception of those majoring in Physical Education or Special Education must
attend a group advising session before you can make an appointment
with an individual adviser in these areas.

How do I make an appointment to see a Teacher Education Adviser?
Call the
Department of Teacher Education
at 734.487.3260 or stop at the desk in 313 Porter.
6.
What do I need to bring to my individualized advising appointment?
Please
bring a copy of your transcripts, advising guide sheets, group advising handbook, Transfer Equivalency Evaluation, a list of questions and
anything else that seems pertinent.
7.
Where should I go to make an advising appointment?
Most questions
can be answered by making an appointment at the Department of
Teacher Education,
313 Porter (734.487.3260) or the department of your major/minor.
8.
Who has to attend a Group Advising Session?
Elementary
Education students and Secondary Education students (with the exception of Physical Education and Special Education majors)
MUST attend a group advising session. Childhood Education
minors MUST also attend a group advising for ECE. Only after
attending a session can a student make an individual appointment with
an adviser (see the links to group advising schedules
above).
K-12 Physical
Education Majors should see an adviser in the Department of Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to determine which group
advising session to attend. Special Education
Major students should see an advisor in the Department of Special Education.
9.
Where can I find out what scholarships I can apply for in the College
of Education?
Log on
to http://www.emich.edu/coe/oas and click "COE Scholarship Information."
10.
When can I register to take professional education courses in the College of Education?
You must be admitted to the Teacher Preparation program to take most of the professional education classes. However, you may register for professional education prior to admission as long as you are admitted to the teacher preparation program prior to the first day of the semester that you are taking the class.
11.
How can I contact a professor? A visiting lecturer?

12.
On my my.emich schedule it doesn’t list room numbers or professors
for some courses. Where can I find this information?
Contact the secretaries
in the department where the class resides.

What services are available in the Clinical Suite?
Different
services are available, some free of charge, to EMU students. These
include counseling services, the reading clinic, and speech/language/hearing
evaluations and therapy. These services are also available to the public
for a minimal fee. For more information about the Clinic
