1. What Grade Point Average do I need for admission to the teacher preparation at EMU?

To be admitted to the initial teacher preparation program, students must have an overall EMU GPA of 2.5, and an EMU GPA of 2.5 in major or the average of all three minors must be 2.5.

2. I received a D in a class towards my minor. Do I have to retake it?

If it affects the overall GPA of your major, or 3 minors, it is recommended you retake the course.

Students in the Teacher Preparation Program must earn a C or higher in ALL Professional Education courses and in the following:

Elementary
Secondary

ENGL 121
CTAS 121/124
MATH 108
MATH 109
All science requirements
EDPS 322
SPGN 251

ENGL 121
CTAS 121/124
MATH requirement
All science requirement
EDPS 322
SPGN 251

3. I have a 2. 49 GPA, can I still get into the Teacher Preparation Program?

You must have a 2.5 overall EMU GPA to get into the Teacher Preparation Program and a 2.5 GPA in your major, or the average of all three minors.

4. I received an E in a course; do I have to take that course over again?

If a student receives an E in a course, they do not necessarily need to repeat it unless it is a requirement for their degree. However, the E will always appear on their transcript because it is part of their academic record. Usually, the fastest way for a student to raise his or her Grade Point Average is to retake any course/s in which he or she received an E.

5. How many times can a course be taken over?

A course may be taken a total of three times.

6. How many courses can I take over at Eastern Michigan University?

A student may not repeat more than 10 courses at EMU.

7. Can I take a course at a community college to change a grade of E for a course I took at Eastern Michigan University?

If a student receives an E in a course at EMU, they may not take it at another institution to remove the E. They may transfer it back to satisfy a graduation requirement, if it applies, but the E will remain on their EMU record.

8. Do I have to take EDPS 322 and SPGN 251 before I apply to the EMU teacher preparation program?

No, however, remember that EDPS 322 is a prerequisite to SOFD 328, CURR 304 and 305, and EDPS 340 and 341. Therefore you will need to take EDPS 322 before you can register for the others. This can happen before you apply to the teacher preparation program, or immediately after. You should also plan to register for SPGN 251 as soon as possible, before or right after you get admitted to the teacher preparation program.

9. Do I have to have completed all my science courses, MATH 108 and MATH 109 before I can apply to EMU's teacher preparation program?

No, but you need to move through these courses as quickly as you can. It is recommended that you complete all the science and math requirements before you apply to the teacher preparation program. Remember that CURR 304 and MATH 109 are prerequisites to MATH 381 and ESCI 303. If you leave the science and math courses to the very end, you could lengthen your overall program.

10. How do I access my academic records?

A. Log onto your my.emich account
B. Select School Services
C. Select Administrative Services
D. Select Student's Financial Aid
E. Select Student Records
F. Academic Transcript

11. What do I do if I don't have the pre-requisite for a course and I can't register?

Prerequisites are required and if they are not met the system will not allow you to register. See catalogs and advising materials for prerequisites and a registration book for information on registering.

12. How do I get an override for a course?

The specific instructor of the course must authorize most overrides. You must contact that instructor.

You can also put your name on a course waiting list in 313 Porter if no overrides are given for a specific Teacher Education course. The department may also open another section.

13. How do I test out of taking a course?

Students can sometimes test out of general education courses, for up to 30 hours, by taking the CLEP exam. For information about the CLEP exam visit: http://www.emich.edu/aac/

14. What does restricted electives mean?

Restricted electives are a group of elective courses that you must choose from. So, if you need 9 credits of restrictive electives, you must choose 9 credits from the restricted elective list provided for your particular major/minor.

15. Are most courses offered Spring and Summer?

Many of the College of Education and Teacher Education courses are offered in Spring and Summer semesters. However, not as many sections are available, so it is important to register early.

Also, many of the secondary content methods courses are only offered once a year—fall or winter. Students need to meet with major advisors to plan appropriately.

16. Where can I find a list of courses to meet the international/cross cultural requirement?

A list of acceptable courses is found in all Elementary and Secondary Education Group Advising Handbooks. Cross-cultural and International studies courses can also be found in the EMU undergraduate catalog.

17. I have some professional education classes that are ten years or older, can these still be used to meet my Professional Education course requirements?

The Department of Teacher Education may evaluate the course, but courses over 10 years old must be retaken.
