1.
What grades can I teach with Elementary Certification?
An Elementary
Teaching Certificate allows the teacher to teach grades K-6. If a student
wishes to teach at the middle school level, grades 6-8, the student
must take the subject area test in his/her major or minor. For more
info, see the Elementary FAQ.
2.
What grades can I teach with Secondary Certification?
The Secondary
Teaching Certificate allows the teacher to teach grades 6-12 in major
and/or minor. For more info, see the Secondary
FAQ.
3.
Should I choose Elementary or Secondary if I want to teach Middle School?
Either
(see above). Consult an academic adviser in the College of Education
for more information.
4.
What do I do if I want to teach mathematics in Middle School?
If you
are an Elementary Education math major, you will need to take the elementary
math subject area test (#89) to be certified to also teach grades 6-8
in math. If you are a Secondary Education math major you need to take
a math subject area test (#22) too.
5.
Is there a limit on the number of special topic credits I can use in my
major or minor?
If there
is a limitation on Special Topics courses, it is determined by the Department.
It would be stated in the catalog http://catalog.emich.edu/.
6.
How do I calculate my grade point average (GPA) for my major/minor?
Refer to
the Calculation of Grade Point Average page in the Group Advising Handbook. There is an online calculator at http://www.emich.edu/aac/gpacalc.htm. You can also ask an advisor for assistance.
