FAQ for Students Seeking Initial Certification and Entering with a Bachelor Degree

Tell me about:

  1. I have a bachelor's degree and now want to get a teaching certificate, what do I have to do?

  2. I’m considering entering the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program. I’ve attended group advising but I can’t see an adviser until I’m admitted. Who can tell me what classes I’ll need to take and how many credits I’ll need to complete the program?

  3. If I attended EMU do I need to request official transcripts?

  4. How long will it take me to finish the program?

1. I have a bachelor degree and now want to get a teaching certificate, what do I have to do?

EMU offers a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program. About 37% of the persons admitted to initial teacher certification already hold at least a bachelor's degree. EMU structures its programs to meet the needs of both the traditional and the non-traditional student by offering courses in the daytime, evening, and weekend.

The first step for the post-baccalaureate certification program is to attend a group advising workshop. Three workshops are offered per month. During the workshop you will receive information regarding the program requirements, admission and financial aid.

If you want to be a special education teacher, you should contact the Department of Special Education directly at 734.487.3300, 128 Porter.

2. I’m considering entering the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program. I’ve attended group advising but I can’t see an adviser until I’m admitted. Who can tell me what classes I’ll need to take and estimate how many credits I’ll need to complete the program?

If you would like to talk with someone about education as a career before you are formally admitted to the teacher certification program, call 734.487.3260 or 734.487.3415. There are advisers in 313 Porter and 206 Porter who can talk about elementary vs. secondary teaching careers, selecting a major/minor, or other general issues. Students receive an official program of study AFTER they have been admitted to the Initial Teacher Certification Program.

Prospective Secondary teachers should contact their major and minor departments for advising appointments. Students should bring transcripts to these advising appointments.

3. If I attended EMU do I need to request official transcripts?

You do not need transcripts for classes taken at Eastern. However, you must provide an official transcript for all courses taken outside of Eastern even if previously transferred.

4. How long will it take me to finish the program?

The length of the program varies for each individual. Students must complete general education requirements for post-baccalaureate students, teachable major and minor courses, as well as Eastern’s professional sequence of courses. The quickest a person could complete the program is in 18 months. Typically the program is 2 to 2.5 years.
