1.
What courses are required for prospective secondary teachers?
Students must complete a specific set of General Education, Major, Minor, and Professional Education Courses. The General Education and Professional Education courses are in the secondary group advising handbook and listed at the bottom of this page. The major and minor requirements come from various departments in the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Technology. Students should contact the appropriate advisors in those colleges and departments (see http://www.emich.edu/coe/advising/advisors2004.html) for advising on the majors and minors. Majors and minors are not official until the student has been admitted to EMU’s teacher preparation program.
2.
What are the secondary methods courses and when are they offered?
Check with
a specific adviser in the major area for the method courses and semesters
they are offered.
3.
Can I substitute a course where we regularly wrote papers about literature
for the following EMU course: ENGL 227?
ENG 227
(Writing about Literature) is an introduction to critical theory as
well as a writing course. It is a gateway course to the upper level
literature classes, so substitutions cannot be made unless the course
addresses multiple critical theories of reading literature.
4.
Do I have to take the MTTC subject area tests
in both my major and minor?
Yes. You
must pass the MTTC subject area tests in both your major and minor (or
two majors). The state will not issue you a Secondary Certificate unless
you have passed BOTH tests. See the MTTC FAQ
for more information.
