1. When should I take the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification?

Take the tests when you have completed 90% of your academic program. Recommendation is:

  • Take the test in April or July if student teaching during the Fall semester.
  • Take the test in October or January if student teaching during the Winter semester.

2. What Michigan Test for Teacher Certification must I take?

Elementary Education Students (K-5):

1) Elementary Education Test (#83),

2) If students wish to teach at the middle school level, grades 6-8 in their major or minor, they must take the subject area tests in the major and minor in those subjects. Students who plan to teach grades K-5 only are not required to take the major/minor tests, and

3) If your major/minor is elementary mathematics, be sure to take Test #89 (Mathematics-Elementary), not Test #22.

Early Childhood Minor (preK-3rd Grade):

1) Elementary Education Test (#83) and

2) Early Childhood Test for endorsement (ZA) (#82).

Secondary (7-12 Grades) and All K-12 Education Students:

Subject area tests in both their major and minor. Physical education students should take Test #44, not Test #42. Mathematics students should take Test #22, not Test #89. Industrial Technology (IX) (# 87) and Technology and Design (TX) (#88) students should take the test that corresponds to the EMU major.

Special Education Students (K-12 Grades):

1) Special education test in the appropriate major area, MI (#56), EI (#59), POHI (#58), VI (#61), HI (#62), and SLI (#57) to receive the endorsement.

2) If students are earning an elementary certificate, they must take the Elementary Education Test (#83). If students want to be certified to teach middle school, grades 6-8 in their minor area, they must take the subject area test for their elementary minor. 3) If students are earning a secondary certificate, they must take the subject area test in the secondary minor.

3. I have taken the Michigan Basic Skills test but I didn’t pass a section, can I take it over?

Yes. You can retake just the section you did not pass.

7. If I take and pass a Michigan Subject Area test (MTTC), can I be certified to teach that subject area?

You can ONLY be certified in subject areas for which you have completed course work for a major or minor. You can NOT be certified by the test results alone. To be certified you must:

  2. successfully complete student teaching, and
  3. pass the appropriate subject area test(s).

8. Where can I go to find out what I need for a teaching certificate in another state?

Browse the Internet for that specific state’s board of education. Most requirements are listed online. Or try Fifty States Certification Requirements at http://www.uky.edu/Education/TEP/usacert.html
