1. What classes transfer from other schools?

Check out the transfer equivalency web site at http://ict.emich.edu/service/online/tranequiv/. or call the Transfer Services at 734.487.1442.

2. Some of my courses did not transfer when I came to EMU. Can I get credit for that work?

Sometimes.

  • For General Education substitutions, go to the department in which the course is taught.
  • For prospective Secondary, K-12 teachers, go to the departments in which the majors and minors are housed.
  • For most prospective Elementary teachers, go to 313 or 206 Porter.
  • For Professional Education substitutions, go to the designated faculty adviser in the Department of Teacher Education (313 Porter).

3. What does MACRAO stand for and what does it mean?

MACRAO stands for the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. It is an agreement that indicates that the record office at the Michigan community college the student attended has verified that the student satisfied the general education requirements for MACRAO agreement.

Students who have the MACRAO satisfied have completed general education requirements and do not need to take any more general education courses, except for the following four requirements which must be completed because of the EMU 1990 Additional Basic Studies Requirement Rule:

  1. An advanced writing or speaking course or a foreign language composition course (Area 1 #3 requirement)
  2. Mathematics course (unless waived by ACT for Secondary Education students only. ALL Elementary Education students must take MATH 108 and MATH 109) (Area 1 #4 requirement)
  3. A computer literacy course (Area1 #5 requirement)
  4. An international or cross-cultural course from an approved list.

Note: This agreement applies only to general education requirements and does not exempt the transfer student from meeting all curriculum and graduation program requirements. Elementary education students should consult an academic adviser regarding this point.

4. Where can I go to get an unofficial transcript evaluation?

Visit EMU’s Transfer Services located in 301 Pierce Hall,
734.487.1442 for an unofficial transcript evaluation.

5. I plan to take courses at a community college before transferring to Eastern. Where can I go to see what courses will transfer into the teacher education program?

Each community college should have a transfer equivalency book for different universities. Visit the community college’s advising center for details. This information is also available online at http://www.emich.edu/registrar/trcenter.htm.

6. I am considering transferring to EMU. What procedures do I follow?

Take the following steps to transfer to EMU:

  1. See the information for prospective students to apply. You will need to have official transcripts from the institutions attended sent to EMU. Apply to the Admissions Office.
  2. Plan to attend an education Group Advising Session ASAP when you arrive on campus. Schedules are also available at the web address above. You do not have to register for these sessions.
  3. You may make an appointment to see an adviser in the Dept. of Teacher Education (734.487.3260) after you receive your transfer evaluation report and have attended a Group Advising Session. Bring the Student Advising Handbook you are given at that session with you to your individual advising appointment.
  4. Call the EMU Transfer Center at 734-487-1442 for more transfer information.

7. Some of my courses transferred as (prefix) BAS. What does this mean?

It means that course meets a General Education requirement. The “BAS” is a reference to the outdated term Basic Studies.

8. I am a senior at another university. Is it too late to transfer to EMU?

In order to graduate from EMU, students must complete at least 60 hours at a four-year institution, of which 30 must come from Eastern Michigan University. In addition, students are expected to take their Professional Education courses at EMU since these courses are thematically tied together.

9. How many credits can I transfer and what are other credit requirements?

Students must earn at least 30 semester hours at EMU. Of the last 30 hours, prior to the granting of a bachelor’s degree, at least 10 hours must be taken in courses offered by EMU. Students with credit from a community college must earn a minimum of 60 semester hours exclusive of community college credit (you must have at least 60 semester hours from a 4-year institution).
