April 26, 2004

John Jiminez '88, the superintendent of the Michigan Central district in Jackson County, has announced his retirement.

Marcus Kaemming has been appointed principal of Chelsea's North Creek Elementary School.  He is currently principal at Mason County Eastern Elementary School.  Kaemming formerly taught at Bingham Farms Elementary in the Birmingham Public Schools.

Jody Kinkaid '03 is a seventh grade mathematics teacher at Pathfinder School in Pinckney.  She is planning to teach in North Carolina next year.

Robert White '49, '51, age 83, died recently in Royal Oak.  He began his teaching career at Northwood Elementary School in Royal Oak, later serving a lengthy period of time as principal of Parker Elementary School in Royal Oak.  He retired in 1979.

Iown Darling '61, '66, age 95, died recently in Saline.  She had a long career as a teacher in one-room schools in the Milan area.

 

April 19, 2004

Barbara Robertson '95 was featured in a full-page story in the 'Community Life' section of a recent issue of the Ann Arbor News.  Robertson has been a substitute teacher in the Ypsilanti and Whitmore Lake schools and has taught in a Montessori preschool.  Currently a 'stay-at-home' mom, she is substantially involved with volunteer work, especially with the LaLeche League of Ann Arbor and with the Open School at Mack.

April 12, 2004

Barbara Weiss ‘50, ‘69 will be recognized on May 8 at the 43rd Alumni Awards Dinner as a recipient of the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award.  She taught in the Wayne school district until transferring to Ypsilanti in 1964 as a string orchestra teacher.  She organized several school music groups in the area.  After retirement in 1985, she has continued as a performer. In 1992 she received the local Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award.

Joe Palka '87 has been named as an EMU assistant football coach.  He has also coached at St. Joseph 's College and at Adrian College .

Elizabeth Daniels is a teacher at Twin Beach Elementary School in Walled Lake .  She was named 'Teacher of the Year' for her building and recently was named to the same award for the Walled Lake district.

John Savel III '97 is the newly-designated superintendent for the Trenton district.

Phillip Haddrill '38, former instrumental music teacher in Milford and in Dearborn Heights , died recently.

Marie Cleary Mangas, age 97, died recently.  She earned a Life Certificate from The Normal in 1926, after which she taught in Detroit briefly.  After a 30+ year interruption, she returned to EMU and earned  B.S. and M.A. degrees.  She then served as a counselor at West Middle School in Ypsilanti .  Her father-in-law founded Cleary College and her first husband served as Cleary College president.  She was the mother of Ann Cleary Kettles, longtime EMU registrar.
