April 29, 2002

Brenda May Bentzel Richter '64, '82, age 57, died recently. Her career was spent in the Ida school district, at the Milan Children's Nursery School, and at Paddock Elementary School in Milan.

David Symington '69, '71, '74, has announced his resignation as principal of Lahser High School in Bloomfield Hills. He has been at Lahser since 1980 in several capacities.

Kathy Witt is the supervisor of special education for the school district that includes Ft. Meyers, Florida.

Barbara Jones '88, '90 works for Saginaw Valley State University. She is the current chair of the executive board for the Young Educators Society and she attended last Saturday's YES convention at EMU.

Daniel Jones '88, '89, '93, a former Ypsilanti social studies teacher, has been in Rome for the past nine years. He is near completion of his doctorate in patristics, the study of early church leaders.

April 22, 2002

William A. Spencer '49, '60, '62, age 83, died recently in Florida. He was retired from the Ann Arbor schools.

Ken Walcott '70, superintendent of the Norton Shores schools, is a candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives.

Letitia Byrd '70, retired teacher from the Ann Arbor schools and civic leader, and Andrew Lindsey '94, '97, '02, award-winner teacher in the Van Buren Public Schools, were featured in the most recent issue of "Focus EMU." Both will receive awards at the April 27 Alumni Awards Dinner.

April 15, 2002

Heloise W. Travis Dunstan '49, '59 died recently at the age of 90. She had a 40-year career as a teacher in the Wayne-Westland school district.

Mary Lou Durbin '52, '60, '66 is still active as a teacher after more than 50 years in the classroom. Her career has been spent in the Garden City school district, with special interests in reading and in special education. In addition to her three degrees from EMU, she holds the Ph.D. from UM, computer credentials from Schoolcraft College, and she has recently explored pursuing additional credentials in reading.

Letitia J. Byrd '70 will receive the EMU Distinguished Alumnus Award in ceremonies at Eagle Crest on April 27.

Stanley Heath '88 was recently named head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Heath, who prepared as a secondary social studies teacher at EMU and who later earned a master's in sports administration at WSU, served as an assistant coach at Hillsdale College, Albion College, WSU, Bowling Green State University, and MSU. Most recently, he has been head basketball coach at Kent State University. He was a three-year letterman in basketball at EMU during his undergraduate years.

Andrew L. Lindsay '94, '97, '02 will receive the EMU Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in ceremonies at Eagle Crest on April 27.

April 8, 2002

Robert Wallace '64, age 69, retired principal of Melvindale High School, died recently at his home in Dearborn. He had worked at that high school since 1957, including as a teacher, counselor, and coach.

At the EMU Alumni Awards ceremony on April 27, Letitia Byrd '70, who is retired from the Ann Arbor schools, will receive the Distinguished Alumnus award. Andrew Lindsay '94, '97, a middle grades teacher in the Van Buren district who has won two state wide teaching awards in the past few years, will receive the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.

Nia Aguirre '95 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News for her work as a "fitness guru, personal trainer, and exercise instructor," with particular emphasis on her work with exercise for senior citizens in the county.

April 1, 2002

The 24 students in the 3rd grade class at Lawton Elementary School (Ann Arbor), taught by Brian Schad ‘78, ‘87, recently learned that they had won third place in a NASA-sponsored contest that drew 1,200 student entries in six categories. The NASA Student Involvement Program Competition aims to stimulate excellence in mathematics, science, technology, and geography.
