Ida
Kingston `44 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News. She
taught first grade for a number of years, then left the profession
for personnel work at the Kaiser-Frazer plant in Willow Run. In later
years, she worked in the reading center at Fletcher Elementary School
and as a receptionist at Ypsilanti High School.
Don
Weatherspoon `71 is assistant superintendent of the Michigan Department
of Education, in charge of administrative law, institutional education,
and safe schools.

GOLDEN
APPLE AWARDS
About
130 Michigan elementary schools have received a state Golden Apple
award, which rewards schools with high or improved test scores with
at least $50,000. Last week's issue of Monday Report identified six
instances where the principal of a Golden Apple school is an EMU alum.
An additional partial list of winners where the principal is an
EMU alum includes:

June
Evelyn Caldwell, age 77, died recently in a local hospital. She
was a pioneer in breaking the "color line" in her line of
work. She spent many years with the Ypsilanti Press and the Ann Arbor
News.
Dorthea V. Burger `56, `60, age 85, died recently in Cleveland,
OH. She retired from Elwell Elementary School (Van Buren district)
after many years of teaching first and second graders.
Christine Rutkowski `89, an eighth grade social studies teacher
at Hartland Middle School, was recently named by the Detroit News
as "Livingston Teacher of the Week."

Bertha
E. Hitchingham, age 98, died recently in Monroe. She taught for
50 years, both at the Dunn School in River Rouge and at St. Frances
Xavier School in Ecorse.
Shelly
Gordinear `99, who teaches sixth-grade mathematics and language
arts at Farms Intermediate School in the Hartland district, was recently
named "Livingston Teacher of the Week" by the Detroit News.
