Jim
Vick `75 was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News as one of
the Finalists in the "Citizen of the Year" recognitions
in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. Vick is Vice President for Student
Affairs at EMU. He was recognized in particular for his work with
Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels.
Three of the six awards made recently by the Michigan Association
of School Administrators went to EMU alums. They are:
Arnold Kummerow `68, `75, superintendent of the Armada Area
Schools, for his leadership in establishing a program such that
all Armada elementary students now receive weekly piano lessons.
Kathy Malnar `88, `90, `96, superintendent of the Hudson
Area Schools, for her leadership in the Community Resource Fair,
an all-day event that brought together residents and service providers
to match resources and meet needs.
Bob Staple `69, superintendent of the Breitung
Township School District (Kingsford) for initiating the "Great
8 Winter Games" for regional student athletes. Eight school
districts, with more than 2000 participants, come together for Olympic-style
events.

Monday Report has learned of the death several months
ago of Ernest J. Buckholz `32. Buckholz was a member of the
famous EMU football team of 1930. He later taught and coached in Mt.
Clemens, served as the athletic director in that district, and served
13 years as the secretary-treasurer for theMichigan High School Athletic
Association, accumulating many honors and recognitions along the way.
The Mt. Clemens football stadium is named in his honor.
Jim Owens `71, `77 and Pete Kudlak `92, `94
were featured recently in the Ann Arbor News for the successes their
Erickson Elementary School students have had in state competition
in chess.
Beth MacCurdy Wigner `79 sang in Carnegie Hall
with the Shawnee Mission (KS) High School alumni choir.
Jeff Bradley `90, a science teacher at Slauson
Middle School, has had his 8th grade students promote the idea of
having the mastodon adopted as the state fossil for Michigan. Students
have gathered more than 4,000 names on a petition and about 300 parents
and students held a rally last Wednesday on the Capitol steps.

4, 2002
Hurley Coleman, Jr. `77 has been named director
of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Detroit. Coleman
has served in the past as a part-time lecturer in HPERD.
Debi Skolnik `96 was recently named "Teacher
of the Week" for Livingston County by the Detroit News. She is
at the Charyl Stockwell/Livingston Developmental Academy in Howell.
