Ron
Collins `74, principal of Ann Arbor's Thurston Elementary, is
one of 10 Michigan educators picked for a highly selective state
program that aims to improve performance of lagging schools by bringing
in specially trained professionals through the Partnership for Success
program. Collins will spend a two-year assignment at Hampton Elementary
School in Detroit.
William
J. "Bill" Bushaw `79, `81 is now the "Chief Academic
Officer," a new position, in the Michigan Department of Education.
Bushaw will head efforts related to accreditation and accountability.
Louise
Marshall, age 88, died recently in Detroit. She was one of the
very early Black teachers in the Ypsilanti schools. She also taught
in Mt. Clemens and was principal of Howe Elementary in Detroit.
George
A. Moroz `37, age 86, of Detroit, died recently. He was a star
athlete at "The Normal," later having a career as a special
education teacher at the high school level in Detroit and Redford.
Charles
H. Lane `48, age 77, died recently in Florida. For 20 years
he was principal of Chelsea High School.
There will be an August 5, 2:00 p.m. memorial service at the Ladies
Literary Club for Leila Riley `59, who died in May at age
86. Riley's late husband was a professor in the EMU Department of
Music and she assisted him in writing a history of the viola. Riley
taught 5th grade for 25 years at Willow Run's Holmes Elementary
School.

Acker `83, a teacher and coach at Willow Run High School, was
named to that school district's Hall of Fame.
Elsie
Lucille Huffman, age 93, died recently in Ann Arbor. A graduate
of "The Normal," she was a longtime employee of the University
of Michigan.
James
H. Rossman, '47, age 84, died several months ago. His teaching
career began in 1935 and he eventually served as superintendent
in four districts, retiring from the Plymouth schools. He was a
former president of the MASA.

Judy
Williston and alum Susan King, `83, `85, who is principal
of River Oaks Elementary in Dearborn, recently taught a three-credit-hour
graduate course at Muskingum College in Ohio.
Emmy
Thomas, `99, and Kevin David, `99, did their student teaching
in Cairo, Egypt in the fall semester of 1998. They stayed in Cairo
until June 1999, returned to the U.S., married each other, and then
moved to Damascus, Syria, in the fall of 1999, where they have lived
since. Both teach in the Damascus Community School, she at the first
grade level and he in mathematics and science at the sixth grade
level.
