March 29, 2004

Diane Moore '73, '83, a Reading Recovery and literacy teacher at Hamilton Elementary School in Westland , was named 'Wayne Teacher of the Week' recently by the Detroit News.

Mary Anne Delacenserie '99, a special education teacher at Villas Elementary School in Ft. Myers , FL ,  received a Golden Apple award recently from the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.  Delacenserie, age 52, became a teacher just five years ago, graduating summa cum laude from the special education program at EMU.

Jeffrey Bradley '90 is one of two Michigan teachers honored with the 2004 Presidential awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.  The award carries with it a $10,000 prize.

The six alums being inducted this year into the Education Alumni Hall of Fame were featured in the  March 9 issue of 'Focus EMU.' Among the attendees at an EMU alumni event in Florida were Mr. and Mrs. Larry ('56, '57) Cunningham, the parents of the Ball State University Athletic Director.  Mrs. Cunningham is the daughter of Frank Manley, a member of the Education Alumni Hall of Fame.  Former faculty member (and fellow Hall of Famer) Bob Parks also attended the event.

Joe Nuzzo '70, a technology education teacher at Lincoln High School , was featured recently in the Ann Arbor News.  Nuzzo recently won the International Technology Education Association's 2004 award for program excellence.

Terrel LeCesne '73, executive director of operations and labor relations for the Ypsilanti schools, will retire from that position at the end of this year.

Mike Flanagan '74, executive director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators, was  featured in the March 2004 issue of The School Administrator.

Phil Booth, a special education teacher at Holt High School , was featured in the March 12 issue of the Lansing State Journal.  Booth and his colleagues organized the second annual Student Transition Conference to help kids who haven't considered college get the feel of the Lansing Community College campus.

David Little, whose death was noted in last week's Monday Report, was a former EMU 'Physical Education Major of the Year.'

Sandra Harris '74, '80, '97 has been named the superintendent of the Lincoln school district.

Quinn Strassel '02 teaches English and drama at the Brooklyn (NY) High School of Telecommunication and Technology.  He has directed West Side Story and a modern adaptation of Oedipus Rex and is in rehearsal for Grease.   A full-page review of his work appeared recently in a Brooklyn newspaper.

Mildred Smith '63, '65 died recently in Ann Arbor at age 98.  Smith first became a teacher at age 61, teaching elementary students in the Wayne-Westland district for some years.  Prior to her teaching career, she was a licensed practical nurse.  After she retired from teaching, she did extensive volunteer work in the South Lyon schools, from which she received an award in 1988 for her work.

David Little '96, aged 58, a physical and health education teacher and swimming coach at the Navigator School in the Pinckney district, died recently.  Little became a teacher at age 50.

March 1, 2004

Dean Rockwell '35 is the author of Antique Knife Rests.  The book is about the history, manufacture, and use of American, English, and continental knife rests in metal, glass, and ceramic.  For information, 734.663.4214.  Rockwell is also organizing an effort to find an authentic wood stove for the Geddes Town Hall School building on campus.

John DiBiaggio '54, '85, member of the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame and former president of Michigan State University and Tufts University , has been named by the University of Colorado to help the school determine whether its embattled athletic department has a culture that encourages mistreatment of women.

James A. Wilsford '70, member of the EMU Education Alumni Hall of Fame, is the author of a software program entitled 'Phonics Too.'  For information, see www.phonicstoo.com.

Sandra Harris '74, '80, '97, interim superintendent of the Lincoln schools, is under consideration for the superintendency position in that district.

John Wilkins '84, is director of bands at Detroit's Mumford High School .  He is also director of the University of Michigan Alumni Pep Band .  In this capacity, he was featured in a front-page story in the February 23 issue of the Ann Arbor News.

Harry A. Graichen '32, aged 94, died recently  in Traverse City .  He taught chemistry, physics, mathematics, and astronomy in the Dansville and Trenton districts and at Albion College and at EMU.  After his teaching career, he worked as a buyer for Fingerle Lumber Company in Ann Arbor .

Joseph Zawadzki '64, '64, age 67, died recently in Canton .  He was a secondary mathematics teacher and wrestling coach in South Redford for 28 years.  After retirement, he operated several retail sports apparel stores. 

Karen Bogotski Cortis, age 54, of Milford , died recently.  She was educational director of the Dorsey Schools, which teach business courses to post-secondary students with locations in Madison Heights , Wayne , Roseville , and Southgate .
