Hannah Levin Gladstone, age 73, died recently of congestive heart failure in her daughter's home in Seattle. She was a former teacher at Sill Elementary School in Detroit and a political activist. She was the sister of U.S. Senator Carl Levin and U.S. Representative Sander Levin.

Sarah Rice Blair, `19, `24, celebrated her 105th birthday last Wednesday at her home in Ann Arbor. She taught in many of the one-room schoolhouses in Washtenaw County, retiring in 1960. Her birthday was scheduled to be a part of today's recognitions on the Today show with Willard Scott.

Walter Jones, Jr. `69, age 64, a longtime Detroit school administrator, died recently of colon cancer. He retired in 1997 from a position as assistant principal at Sanders Elementary School.

May 21 , 2001

John DiBiaggio is retiring as president of Tufts University, effective in August. DiBiaggio has held the position almost a decade.

May 13 , 2001

Russell Fancett, age 75, of Ellicott City, MD, died recently. He was a longtime teacher in the South Redford schools who also taught at Cleary College. He was active in several professional organizations.

Karen Phipps Yankie, `68, `76, was named Teacher of the Year for the Albion schools. She has taught special education in Albion for 33 years.

Leonard J. Ryszka, `72, `78, a social studies and language arts teacher in Addison, was named Middle School Track Coach of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association. Ryszka has taught at Addison Middle School for 27 years.

Grace Conrad, `75, a veteran of 22 years of teaching, is currently a second-grade teacher at Bea McDonald Elementary School in Marlette.

David Vensel, `82, is assistant principal of Airport High School in Carleton.

Stephanie L. Chew Sandquist, `89, is a special education teacher for the Norwalk Community School District in Norwalk, Iowa.

May 7 , 2001

Hayes Jones, `61, prominent Pontiac businessman, and Mary Wiermanski Kauper, `86, associate vice president of the Cranbrook Educational Community, are slated to become members of the EMU Foundation Board of Trustees in the near future.

Lois L. Jansen, `68, `70, age 54, died recently. She was a long time elementary teacher in the Lincoln schools.

Peter A. Collins, `68, `71, teaches mathematics at Chattanooga State Community College. He is currently president of the Tennessee Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. His wife, Gail L. Neubauer Collins, `68, `71, expects to complete her Ed.D. in the near future through the University of Tennessee.

James Boyce, `75, age 64, former EMU head basketball coach and longtime basketball coach and head of the athletic department at Mumford High School in Detroit, died recently. While at EMU Boyce taught the Theory of Basketball course in HPERD.

Joan Lee Scheel, `75, age 58, died recently. She was a former teacher in the South Lyon schools.

Christine Cooper, `01, was one of a small number of students recognized individually during recent EMU Commencement ceremonies. Cooper, who received a bachelor's degree in special education, was cited for her extensive community activities, considerable involvement in EMU campus life, and high achievement. Cooper plans to continue toward a masters degree in learning disabilities.
