Marilyn
Svaluto ‘67, ‘70, ‘71,
principal of Davidson Middle School in Southgate,
was recently named by the National Association of
Secondary School Principals as one of 93 ‘Principals
of the Year.’ The honorees come from all
50 states, the District of Columbia,
and the Overseas Dependent Schools.
Joseph
Maierle ‘90, ‘97, current student
in the educational specialist
program in educational leadership
and principal of Father
Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor, was
killed in a car crash early on
November 20. Maierle
taught physical education
at St. Francis School in Ann
Arbor for many years before being
named as principal
of Gabriel Richard
High in 2002. He was 48.

Jim
Vick ‘75, EMU’s vice
president for student affairs, was honored by the
DTE Energy Foundation and Michigan Nonprofit Association
with the 2003 Community Luminary Award. The award
was presented in Detroit on November 12 and includes
a gift of $1,000 to Meals on Wheels, Vick’s
charity of choice.
Florence
Lucille Stevens ‘42, age 85, died
recently in Ann Arbor.
She taught in area elementary
schools for some years before joining the staff
of
the EMU Library, where
she served from 1948 to 1977.

Margaret
Muir '14, aged 107,
is the cover story subject of
the
July/August 2003 issue of Faith
magazine. Muir and
her sister May enrolled
in a six-week teacher
training course in 1914 at the Michigan
State Normal School.
George
McCreedy and Trudy Adams,
both teachers at Ypsilanti
High School, were featured
in a recent issue of
the Ann Arbor News for their creative
work in team teaching
a humanities course.
A recent activity included a walking field trip
to
the Tower Inn Restaurant,
with a stop at the bust
of Demetrius Ypsilanti, to
kick off their unit on Greek
history and literature.
Jeff
Bradley '90, physical
science teacher at Slauson Middle School,
received a $5,760 grant from the
U.S. Department of
Energy to install solar
panels at the school.
He and his students are
raising the remaining
half of the money necessary and are within $1,000
of their
goal. The electricity
generated will
generate about 120 kW, enough
to
power electrical devices in the
pool area.
Julie Snider '98, a teacher at Mill
Creek Middle School in Dexter,
along with two other teachers from
the school, was recently at the
American Association of School
Librarians convention in Kansas
City, MO to present "S4, RAP, and
the Media Center." The
team teaching effort
for 7th graders combines computer
basics, multimedia applications,
library/information skills, and
"skills and strategies for student
success."
Alison
Billings '03 is the chapter resource
consultant for 11 states
for Kappa Delta Pi. Billings held
several offices in the
local chapter while a student.
Melissa
Keilman '03 is now teaching
elementary physical education in
the Crestwood district (Dearborn
Heights).
Dorothy
Alban Hale '29, age 95, died recently
in Chelsea. She taught
school for 24 years in the Pleasant
Lake, Manchester, and Ann Arbor
schools.

Curtis
Bartz ‘58, ‘61 is leading a work
team to Haiti to
build the walls of
a three-room school,
located in the village
of Tovar outside
of Cap Haitien. The team will leave
Detroit on January
31 and will return on February
8. Faculty, staff,
or students interested in
joining the team

Evelyn Thayer, age 94, died
recently. She taught in the Ida schools
for some years.
Nedra
J.
Otis ‘66, aged 82, died
recently.
After completing her
master’s at EMU, she earned a Ph.D. in
counseling from
UM. She taught in
the Willow Run and
Ypsilanti districts,
including 10 years of service in the adult
education
program.
Karl
Knoll ‘82, aged 52, died
of
a heart attack. He earned his
bachelor’s degree at EMU and began his
career in Au Gres.
However, soon afterwards
he taught English
and coached track and field at
Gabriel Richard High
School in Riverview.
Later, he coached
track at Southgate’s Anderson High School. At the
time of his death,
he was
working with special
education students
as a resource room teacher in
Detroit’s Mark Twain and Daniel Webster
elementary schools.
