Phyllis Ranson `78, `88, a physical wellness teacher at Lakewood Elementary School in West Ottawa, has been selected as a runner in the relay to light the Olympic torch for the 2002 Winter Olympics. She will run 0.2 mile in Indiana on January 3 or 4. About 300 of her students wrote letters last spring nominating her.

Alice Brobst-Walsh of Milan was the subject of a feature article in the Ann Arbor News for her receipt of the Odyssey Award from the Michigan Historical Center Foundation.

September 17, 2001

Doris Elsie Milliman `39, age 96, of Ypsilanti, died recently. She attended "The Normal" during the 1920's and received a life teaching certificate. She taught in Ohio elementary schools, then returned to what is now EMU for her bachelor's degree. She later earned the M.A. from the University of Michigan. She served as librarian at Wayne High School, then came to EMU to be in charge of circulation at the EMU library. She later served in other school library positions. Milliman was very active in local civic groups.

September 10 , 2001

Josephine B. Hackel `25, age 95, died recently. She graduated from what is now EMU in 1925 with a degree in physical education. She was a longtime employee of Ford Motor Company.

Thomas B. "Barney" Dyer, age 81, who received a degree from what is now EMU following his service in World War II, died recently. While at Michigan State Normal College, he was a distinguished athlete and assistant football coach under Elton J. Rynearson. Later he taught science at what is now Slauson Middle School between 1958 and 1981.

Applications for the 2002 competition in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program may be submitted via www.iie.org/pgms/fmf until December 18. K-12 teachers and administrators may participate in a fully-funded three-week study visit to Japan.

Alice Brobst-Walsh `87, a fourth-grade teacher at Paddock Elementary School in Milan, is one of five exceptional fourth-grade teachers in the state to be honored on September 29 in Lansing with the Michigan Historical Center Foundation Odyssey Award.

September 4 , 2001

Eileen Shivak `90 was one of two parents interviewed for a story on "first day of kindergarten" in the August 29 issue of the Ann Arbor News. Since receiving her masters in early childhood education, Shivak has been a full-time mom to her 11-year-old and her 5-year-old.
