Project Backpack

History will well-record not only the devastation of Hurricane Katrina but also how well and how quickly the American public responded to the challenges and needs of its fellow countrymen.

Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education, under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Williams-Boyd, Dr. Jackie Tracy, Ms. Susan Rink and colleagues, initiated “Project Backpack” to help provide school supplies to hurricane victims as they arrived at schools in other states during their period of transition.

Special acknowledgement was extended to the volunteer team that delivered the supplies to Baton Rouge, including Nancy Copeland, Dr. Pat Williams-Boyd, Dr. Cristina Jose-Kampfner, Dr. Pamela Smith, and Dr. Ethan Lowenstein. We are grateful to our other partners in this effort: Eastern Michigan University's Continuing Education office, Corrigan Moving of Ann Arbor, for a truck and trailer, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, for use of a passenger van.
