Dr. Pedro Noguera: “The Schools We Need: The Limits and Possibilities of Using Education to Transform Impoverished Communities”

Dr. Pedro Noguera

Pedro Noguera is a professor in the Steinhardt School of Education and the Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University. An educator and urban sociologist, Noguera’s activist scholarship and research focuses on student achievement, youth violence, race, and ethnic relations.  He is the author of several books including City Schools and the American Dream and Unfinished Business: Closing the Achievement Gap in Our Nation’s Schools.

Dr. Deborah Meier: “Educating for What?  The Struggle for Democracy in Education”

Dr. Deborah Meier

Deborah Meier has spent more than four decades working in public education as a teacher, principal, writer and educational advocate. She was the founder and teacher-director of a network of highly successful public schools in New York City that are considered exemplary models of urban school reform. She is the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Award and many honorary degrees, and the author of numerous books including The Power of Their Ideas and Many Children Left Behind.

Dr. Jean Anyon

Jean Anyon is an acclaimed social activist and educational researcher.  Her work examines the impact of public policy on urban communities and schools.  A professor of Social and Educational Policy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, Anyon’s work includes: Ghetto Schooling and Radical Possibilities: Public Policy, Urban Education and a New Social Movement.
