Recently, I was asked to give a keynote address during the fall convocation at my University for 3,000 new students and their parents. My address, though prepared for the general audience, had particular importance for first generation college students and their parents. |

I tried in the most explicit ways possible to draw a clear correspondence between attending a reputable 4-year institution like Eastern Michigan University and access to certain forms of economic, human, social, and cultural capital which will have far-reaching impacts on their personal lives and the well-being of their community.

Dr. John M. Palladino's writings and research encompass everything from social work and special education to educational and ethical leadership, though the subject that seems truest to his heart concerns foster care children and their uniquely special needs.
The idea for one of his latest contributions "resulted from my observation of the overlay between the educational needs of youth in foster care and homeless youth," he explained.
"[This was] a contribution to the literature that has otherwise not existed."
The research project involved high school administrators "and their perceptions of collaborating with homeless mothers on behalf of their children who warranted special education courses," following the mandates of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act of 2002.

Dr. Donald Peurach, new to the Department of Leadership and Counseling, negotiated a National Science Foundation (NSF) sub-grant of $50,000 with the University of Michigan. Peurach, who completed his Ph.D. at U-M in 2005, explained that the grant will be used to support continued involvement in the Study of Instructional Improvement (SII) at the University of Michigan.

Fulbright Scholar Award
"See the red dots on these maps? Those are landmines," Associate Professor J. Joe Bishop explained. He recently spent 6 months in Bosnia and Herzegovina as the recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Award on the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo.
He taught a course on "Active Teaching for Democratic Citizenship," studied Arabic and the Bosnian language while there, and was awarded a Diploma in Islamic Studies. |

100 Doctors and Counting...
The doctoral program in Educational Leadership honored its first 100 graduates. The College of Education was the first college at Eastern Michigan University to offer a doctoral degree (Ed.D.).

Bonisteel Computer Lab Classroom 205E has 25 new “all-in-one” Gateway PCs. These student stations have combo CD/DVD/floppy disk drives, and both Firewire and USB ports. The classroom also has 2 teaching stations, a scanner, printer, and a 500GB external hard drive which allows ample storage of larger files, like those created with MovieMaker.
In addition to office, web and photo editing software, SynchronEyes, a classroom management software, allows instructors to communicate and interact with students via computer screens.
Deep Freeze, a “reboot to restore” software, ensures the integrity of the units’ hard drive and operating systems for subsequent users.
