Vernon C. Polite

Vernon C. Polite is Professor and Dean of the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University.  With more than 5,000 students enrolled in the College of Education, Eastern Michigan is one of the largest colleges of education in the nation.  Most recently he served as Professor and Founding Dean of the School of Education at Bowie State University.  Dr. Polite earned his A.B. in sociology from Boston University, an M.Ed. from Boston State College, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in the area of K-12 Educational Administration with a cognate in Sociology. At Michigan State, Dr. Polite was a CIC Academic Leadership Fellow. He specializes in research focused on organizational change, Leadership in Higher Education, urban school leadership, and minority educational issues.  He has served in a number of administrative positions in both public and Catholic institutions including principal at the elementary and secondary school levels, federal education monitor to the U.S. Territory of the Virgin Islands, and director of Boston Public Schools’ Desegregation Department.  Dr. Polite was the Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes Professor of Urban Education at the Catholic University of America.  He has provided professional development training for middle school principals affiliated with the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation’s Program for Student Achievement in Oakland CA, Chattanooga TN, Baltimore MD, Louisville KY, San Diego CA, and Corpus Christi TX.  He has authored numerous scholarly publications and presents regularly at the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association where he held a presidential appointment to the Social Justice Committee and is a recipient of a Distinguished Service Award from the American Educational Research Association.
