Minutes of meeting on 12/14/99
In
attendance: Carolyn Finch, Assoc. Dean;
Chris Bocklage, FA; Kaia Skaggs, TED;
Jackie Tracy, EDLD; Judy Williston, TED
Approved
minutes from 11/23/99 meeting.
Dr.
Finch has browsed and printed off some of the existing conceptual frameworks
from master’s programs. She showed an
example of another university’s conceptual framework, which looked at 5 broad
areas: knowledge of students and
society, knowledge of subject matter, knowledge of pedagogy, professional
dispositions, and field-based experiences.
This example incorporated information from research, best practices,
advisory groups, accrediting agencies and organizations, and state
standards. It also emanated from
faculty discussion, although that discussion was embedded in a research and
best-practice base.
The current conceptual frameworks
address background, theme, and components of the knowledge base. All of the existing frameworks have a common
theme which we might use as a starting point.
Most of them go on to address background, theme, and components of a
knowledge base. What is missing is the
research that supports the knowledge base.
We should have a research basis for what is included with a bibliography
for each knowledge base component. Each
specific program will need to add components particular to that program, also
supported by a research base.
Currently initial programs are in a
much more developed state than advanced programs. It was suggested that perhaps we come up with matrices which
include outcomes rather than courses to show how the conceptual framework
components are embodied in our programs.
Most of what exists currently is keyed to courses rather than to
outcomes. We need to present the
information as clearly and succinctly as possible for review committees, and
having matrices as well as narrative might help do that.
Lack of representation from all
involved programs continues to be a problem.
Dr. Williston will continue to try to contact committee members on the
list who have not attended and will encourage departments to replace members
who cannot attend. We especially need
representatives from special ed., elementary ed., reading, physical education,
business and technology ed.
Dr. Finch will talk to Dean Robbins
about further clarification on the format for the conceptual framework.
Meeting dates
for Winter term will beJan 25th, Feb. 22nd, March 28th,
April 18th. The next meeting
will be held on Jan. 22th at 3:30 (in 222 Porter???). Possible agenda items include:
• continue
to review the conceptual frameworks that already exist
• examine
the possibility of creating templates or at least some structure for programs
to use to create their conceptual frameworks; possibly using art education’s
work or other examples from Dr. Finch.
Respectfully
submitted,
Kaia Skaggs,
Secretary
