Minutes from the January meeting were approved. We reviewed the proposal for spring/summer functioning. By March 20th, each member should provide Judy Williston with the name of spring and/or summer contacts. We reiterated that the committee is uncomfortable with major work, such as completely new programs or courses, being passed by the ad hoc committee, but that routine matters such as course changes could be facilitated. In another personnel matter, Mary Teal will be replaced on the committee by Rachel Harley.
The EDLD course changes were approved. The notebooks appear to work reasonably well for communication. Two concerns were noted: the rationale for EDLD 616 needs to be strengthened, it is not as substantive as the others; the change to 3 hours for EDLD 712 does not seem justified on the basis of the few assignments described. Jackie Tracy will see that the concerns are addressed and send the course proposals forward.
Dr. Finch provided a packet of handouts regarding the format and organization of NCATE conceptual frameworks. In addition, she shared a book from AACTE, Common sense about uncommon knowledge: The knowledge base for diversity, that might provide useful references regarding the knowledge base for diversity which is part of our mission statement. She will purchase additional copies of this text for those who are interested. Considerable time was spent in discussion of the materials she provided and how they might be used by individual programs.
We also discussed where information about dispositions might be found. There are several professional organizations that include dispositions in their standards, such as the NEA code of ethics, ACEI standards, INTASC, NAEYC, NMSA, and CACREP. We might also look at some districts' teacher candidate interview forms. For example, Livonia's includes dispositions. Outcomes that are created need to go by the college/departmental advisory committees as part of the process.
Physical Education and Early Childhood presented examples of how they are aligning outcomes and assessments.
The remaining meetings of the semester will be March 20th and April 17th.
Respectfully submitted,
Kaia Skaggs
